Pay phones may not be as prevalent as they used to be, but who’s to say that they aren’t staples of our environments? In the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Brazil, an interesting public art project “Call Parade” sponsored by Brazilian telecommunications firm Vivo is ongoing now. It paired 100 artists with 100 street-side phone booths giving them free reign to transform the peculiar hooded fixtures into anything imaginable. The public shells are intricately adorned, painted, and illustrated on to depict anything from an elaborate mansion to a vibrant cartoon fish. The concept behind each booth is just as interesting as how the artists choose to fashion both the outside and inside of said shells. You can see a gallery of all 100 phones [here].
It’s hard to believe but in days gone by telephone booths were a device that everyone wanted to use and at one time were the only way to make a telephone call outside of the home. With the galloping development of mobile technology, public phone booths seem to be more and more redundant. If you pay enough attention, you will find some still cool ones standing on the roads. Check out this gallery of the 12 Cool and Unusual Phone Booths Around the World. Hope you like them and don’t hesitate to share us any cool local phone booth you found.
