What if the ampersand had a personality? That’s the question New York-based designer and art director Diego Pinilla Amaya asked himself—and the result is The Ampersand Crowd, a playful design project that turns the familiar symbol into a lively cast of characters.
Inspired by the ampersand’s naturally elegant curves, Diego imagined it as more than just a typographic element. First came a dapper gentleman, suited up in black with white gloves and shiny shoes. From there, the idea snowballed into ten quirky characters, including a fireman, a clown, a baseball player, and more. Each one brings its own charm, showing just how expressive a single symbol can be.
The Ampersand Crowd is more than just a fun visual experiment. It’s a creative celebration of type design, full of personality and clever detail. Diego Pinilla Amaya’s work reminds us that even something as small as a symbol can tell a story—if you look at it the right way.
