As the largest living structures on the planet, coral reefs are also among the greatest storehouses of biodiversity on Earth. While Coral Reefs are also one of the most threatened marine systems. Scientists estimate that unless we take immediate action, we could lose up to 70 percent of coral reefs by 2050.

I hope we can do something to protect our ocean, our environment. And our decedent still have the chance to see those beautiful scenery by themselves, but only on the books.

2. Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the world, composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for 2,600 kilometers over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometers .The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in northeast Australia.
The Great Barrier Reef supports a diversity of life, including many vulnerable or endangered species, some of which may be endemic to the reef system.

3. Jarvis Island

A coral island is the result of an atoll whose lagoon has dried up or been filled in with coral sand and detritus. This state is typically the last in the life cycle of an island, the first being volcanic and the second being an atoll. Most of the world’s coral islands are in the Pacific Ocean. The American territories of Jarvis Island is clear examples of coral islands.

4. Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize Barrier Reef is a series of coral reefs straddling the coast of Belize, roughly 300 meters offshore in the north and 40 kilometers in the south within the country limits. It is continuous from Cancún on the northeast tip of the Yucatán Peninsula through the Riviera Maya up to offshore Guatemala, making it the second largest coral reef system in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, popular for scuba diving and snorkeling.

5. New Caledonia Barrier Reef

The New Caledonia Barrier Reef is located in New Caledonia in the South Pacific, and is the second-longest coral reef in the world, after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.The reef has great species diversity with a high level of endemism, and is home to endangered dugongs (Dugong dugon), and is an important nesting site for Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas)..

6. Andros, Bahamas Barrier Reef

Andros Island has the world’s third largest barrier reef, which is over 140 miles (230 km)long. It is affectionately known by Bahamians as the “Big Yard”.
