United Kingdom-based artist Yulia Brodskaya (previous), who has been using light backdrops for her densely quilled paper portraits started to chanllege herself with dark canvas. “Black color is dense, dominating, it absorbs all reflections and most of the shadows; only top edges of paper strips are left to see,” she says. Due to the background tone change, some of her standard techniques, like composing portraits with thin strips, don’t translate well any more.

To overcome these issues, Brodskaya started to use thicker rolls and larger bends to create necessary contrast. And the end result is impressive, these vibrant portraits seem to be painted with paper.

Below are some of Brodskaya’s work and you can find more on her Instagram.
