Defined in traditional terms, pyrography is the art of drawing with fire; using a heated tip or wire to burn or scorch designs onto natural surfaces such as wood and leather. Modern day pyrography is typically done with solid-point tools, which resemble but are more sophisticated than soldering irons or hot wire tools. The artist featured in today’s post, Julie Bender, using tools that allow her flexibility to develop her unique style. When I first saw these animal illustration, I found it so hard to believe they were actually wood burnings. The Atlanta-based artist brings these creatures to life with each intricately defined stroke of fur or feather on their body. I’ve seen Julie’s work before and it never ceases to amaze me. As a pyrographer myself I understand what it takes to produce pictures like this, although I don’t pretend to be anywhere near her standard.
