I’ve always been fascinated by how old-school crafts can suddenly feel brand new again. I recently stumbled upon The Wicker Story, a design studio based in Hyderabad, and I’m honestly obsessed with how they’re shaking things up. Founded in 2019 by architect Priyanka Narula, they’ve found a way to take traditional Indian basketweaving and turn it into something that looks like it belongs in a high-end art gallery.

What really grabbed my attention is how they play with geometry and math to create these incredible contemporary installations. It’s not just about making a simple basket anymore. They’re using natural materials to build everything from fluid, “melting” light fixtures to bean-shaped benches and bulbous floor lamps that feel totally organic. It’s like they’ve taken the DNA of a time-honored aesthetic and given it a futuristic, botanical soul.

Walking through a space filled with their work feels like being surrounded by giant, woven petals and vine-like tendrils. I love that they aren’t afraid to experiment with colorful dyes and wild, flowing forms. It’s a perfect example of how sustainable decor can be incredibly high-design without losing that handmade touch.

The coolest part? They aren’t stopping at wicker. They’re actually deep in the lab right now, figuring out how to translate these traditional Indian basketweaving techniques into metal weaving. I can’t wait to see what those contemporary installations look like when they debut next year. If you love organic wicker furniture with a story behind it, you have to check out their Instagram.
