What if your next pair of shoes didn’t come from a shoe store, but straight from the garden? Artist Katerina Shukshina makes that wonderfully strange idea feel almost possible, creating flower shoes and other playful footwear from fresh plants, leaves, grasses, flowers, and even vegetables.
Her plant shoes look like a tiny fashion collection that has somehow sprouted from the ground. One pair might be covered in delicate blue flowers and green leaves, while another is almost completely taken over by big pink blooms. Then there are fluffy dandelion slippers that look like they’re made from soft fur and ballet flats shaped from zucchini. Yes, zucchini!
Shukshina starts by looking at familiar plants in unexpected ways. A vegetable can suggest the shape of a shoe, while stems and leaves can become straps, laces, or uppers. Instead of forcing a plant into a predetermined design, she lets its natural shape and texture help guide the finished piece.
The result is botanical footwear that feels more like something from a fairytale than a fashion collection. The basic shoe silhouette is still there, but almost everything else has been replaced by something from nature.
There’s also something wonderfully fleeting about these flower shoes. Because Shukshina works with fresh plants, the pieces can change quickly. Flowers wilt, leaves dry, and vegetables eventually go back to being vegetables. In that sense, her plant shoes are temporary artworks, often preserved through photography before nature takes over again.
Shukshina grew up surrounded by gardens, fields, and forests, so working with plants has long been part of her creative world. Along with shoes made from flowers, she creates other plant-based accessories and garments, turning everyday bits of nature into wonderfully unexpected fashion.
