Sometimes, all it takes is a splash of color and a little imagination to transform a city space—and that’s exactly what The Nest does. Created by 100architects in Chengdu, this bold, vibrant playscape is a public space you can’t ignore. It’s playful, it’s striking, and it’s designed to bring people together, no matter their age.

100architects call projects like this “urban toys for the city,” and The Nest fully embraces that idea. It’s not just a playground for kids—it’s a space for everyone. Whether you’re a toddler, a teen, or a grandparent, there’s something here for you. Think of it as part park, part sculpture, part joyful escape in the middle of the city.

The story behind the design is as charming as the space itself. Inspired by the moment baby birds hatch in their nest, the design centers around three colorful birds—a mama and her two chicks—brought to life as climbable play structures for kids. Around them, a series of colorful circular platforms spread out like ripples, each with something fun or functional. There’s a sandpit, swings, a trampoline, even a ping-pong table and fitness zone. Adults haven’t been left out either—there are shaded seating areas, Chinese chess tables, and gentle workout equipment designed for elders.

To tie everything together, a looping running track weaves through the space, making it not just fun but interactive. It’s a circuit of color and movement that invites everyone to explore and enjoy.

The surface of The Nest playground is just as clever—made from soft EPDM rubber for safety and covered in playful patterns and interactive games. At night, the whole place glows thanks to LED strips that trace the outlines of the egg-shaped canopies and lamp posts, creating a magical, otherworldly vibe.

Whether you’re climbing, relaxing, or just soaking in the creative design, The Nest is a perfect example of how urban playscapes can turn ordinary spaces into unforgettable experiences.
