Art has a wonderful way of bridging different cultures, and artist Hannah Lim does it with so much playfulness and heart! Drawing from her British-Singaporean heritage, classical Chinese literature, and historical ceramics, the London-based sculptor creates whimsical works that completely transform traditional design.
Lately, she has been putting her own conscious twist on Chinoiserie art—a European design trend from the 17th and 18th centuries that mimicked Asian aesthetic motifs. One of her coolest projects takes inspiration from historical Chinese snuff bottles. Traditionally, these tiny, jewel-like containers were made to fit right in your palm for holding powdered tobacco. Hannah takes that idea and scales it way up into colorful, oversized sculptures made from polymer clay, Jesmonite, and glossy acrylics. She even hides a charming little hanging pendant inside each lid as a nod to the original spoon design!
What makes Hannah Lim sculptures feel so magical are the creatures adorning them. Inspired by ancient mythical texts like The Classic of Mountains and Seas, her pieces feature vibrant painted animals, imaginary beasts, and intricate laser-cut details that make each object feel like a enchanted treasure.
If you happen to be traveling through the U.K., you can catch her solo show Reimaginings at the Museum of East Asian Art in Bath, or keep an eye out for her upcoming public installation in Paddington, London.
