There is something genuinely magical about finding a miniature masterpiece tucked inside a rugged piece of rock. Sculptor Matthew Simmonds does exactly that, unearthing incredibly detailed gothic marble sculptures from within chunks of raw Carrara marble and limestone. It’s like stumbling upon a secret world that’s been waiting centuries to be found.

What makes his work so striking is the “clash” of textures. One side of the piece might be a jagged, uneven boulder, while the interior reveals hand-carved Doric columns, perfect arches, and precise architectural details. This contrast makes the spaces feel like ancient ruins or rediscovered holy sites hidden away from the modern world.

Simmonds isn’t just guessing where to chip away; he’s a former architectural stone carver with a lifelong obsession with rock. You can see that expertise in his 2025 standout piece, Gothic Passage with Sedilia. It’s a beautiful study in balance—using the heavy, solid nature of the stone to create a sense of airy, sacred space. He treats these stone cathedrals with a level of reverence that makes the heavy material feel light, almost ethereal.

“This sculpture explores… a balance of symmetry and asymmetry,” Simmonds explains. “A passage moves through the stone between two repeating worlds.”

It’s a poetic reminder that perfection often lives right inside the imperfect. By leaving the outer edges of the stone rough, Simmonds celebrates the raw beauty of nature alongside the disciplined beauty of human craft.
