If you’ve never heard of a nudibranch, prepare to meet your new favorite animal. These tiny, soft-bodied creatures are technically sea slugs, but don’t let the name fool you—they are some of the most stylish, neon-colored “molluscs” in the ocean. There are about 3,000 species out there, and artist Arina Borevich of Wool Creature Lab is on a mission to recreate every single one of them out of wool.

Arina’s journey started a decade ago in the most “main character” way possible: she was working as a cook at a remote biological research station in Russia’s White Sea. Surrounded by 200 scientists on a tiny island, she fell in love with these “impossibly colorful” creatures that look like they belong on another planet.

What started as a creative way to pass the time—felting a few specimens as gifts for the biologists—quickly turned into Wool Creature Lab. Now, divers and marine scientists from across the globe reach out to her to commission specific felted nudibranchs, sometimes even the very species they discovered themselves!

So far, Arina Borevich has tackled over 40 different types, but with thousands left to go, she’s got her work cut out for her. Each sculpture takes between six to 12 hours of meticulous poking and prodding to get those vibrant textures just right. It’s a slow-motion labor of love that brings the hidden beauty of the deep sea right into our hands. Honestly, who knew sea slugs could be this cuddly?
