Johnson Tsang is one of our favoriate sculptor. Since 2010, the first time we featured his work “Coffee Kiss“, he keeps amaze us by his unusual mind-open sculptures (see here and here). One of the obvious feature of his works is the illusion of movement it gives you when you look at those sculptures. No matter it is the distorted human face or the liquid-looking kiss faces, it is hard to believe these are actually made out of porcelain. Not sure why, but the majority of Tsang’s porcelain portraits appear less at ease. The stout, rounded faces are contorted, squashed, and stretched by hands that are often not their own, which makes the sculpted characters look pained and troubled, like they’re haunted by inner demons that won’t set them free. Although it gives you a pretty dark feeling, they are still really impressive work.
